Chicken's Kittens

About two months ago, a stray cat started hanging out around our house. At first, she was terrified of us, but we produce a lot of chicken bones, and she liked to watch our chickens, so she stuck around (and got herself the name Chicken). Some of you may remember her from Isaac's blog Stalked at Night.

As luck would have it, she was pregnant. (A story blog about that will be coming soon to I Have Girl Parts, my sister blog.) She gave birth to four kittens the day after Thanksgiving, November 23, making them six weeks old as of January 4.

Doctor Who

Meet the thirteenth regeneration of the Doctor! I think he's actually about a week older than his siblings, which would be possible with the TARDIS. He was the first to walk, eat real food, climb, explore the outside world... His greatest nemesis at this point in time is the Invisible Shadow Thing of Doom. He fights it often.

Appa

Appa was named by the kitties' Auntie Alex, who was there at their birth. Like his namesake, he is unafraid of heights and is often found climbing anything from the broom handle to me. He also recently found out how to get on the furniture, which is hilarious, but it also means we can no longer hide things from the kitties on the furniture... He's a cuddler and best friends with Doctor Who.

Maní Forrajero

Maní, the only female, is the only kitten to end up with an Ecuadorian name. Maní is Ecuadorian Spanish for peanut, and maní forrajero is a type of plant common around our house. She's the shyest of the bunch, and she's usually found with her fuzzy brother, Hirsute, either napping or biting his throat. She's got the best mix of smart and sweet.

Hirsute

Hirsute (her-SUIT), aka Hair Suit, Fuzz, The Fuzz, Hair Pants, or Pants, is fuzzy. He usually looks completely lost, and he might actually usually BE lost. He's the mama's boy of the bunch, still begging to be nursed, though I think he just wants to hang out with her. His best friend is Maní--they like to fight on the broom. He has a funny voice and might actually be from somewhere in rural England.

  1. Yeah, I like to pretend like I'm in charge...

Right now, Chicken usually ignores the chickens, but the kittens are really curious. The Doctor keeps egging the rooster into almost fighting him, and the others hiss at the chickens whenever they come near (which is pretty hilarious--it mostly sounds like heavy breathing). Before she had her kittens, Chicken would sit next to the house watching the chickens. She finds them interesting, but she doesn't think they're food.

  2. I laughed so much reading this post! Especially the part about Hirsute. Completely lost.

Curious... did you guys actually receive the Christmas card we sent to you? Just wondering how well the mail works.
