Cambodia Quiz Answers!

After reviewing the submitted answers to Cambodia's quiz, we have decided that YOU ALL FAIL! Except Naomi who got two of three answers correct--thank you for playing! We'll just have to answer the questions for you:

1. What is the approximate US value of the smallest denomination riel bill?
The smallest riel banknote (50 riel) is worth about 1 US cent.

U.S. bills are generally used as currency in Cambodia with riel used for anything less than a dollar. So if you go to the store and buy something for $20.25, you would pay $25 USD and 1000 riel. Riel coins are rare and probably won't be accepted (neither are U.S. coins). The history of Cambodian money is pretty interesting.

2. What is the name of Cambodia’s most infamous leader?
Pol Pot. Born Saloth Sar, he led the Khmer Rouge from 1963 to his death in 1998.

3. What Wonder of the Ancient World is in Cambodia?
Angkor Wat.

"Wat" means "temple" (or "school," probably in reference to monks' occupation of wats) in both Khmer and Thai (and is also used in Laos). Angkor Wat is such an important part of Cambodia's history that it appears on their flag.

It's one of the most popular tourist destinations in Cambodia; however, we did not go see it this trip. Just means we'll have to go back someday!

We let you off easy this time! Please stay tuned for our Spotlight on the Philippines and a new quiz!

  1. i think the questions about money currency will never be answered right(humble oppinion). it can be found on the internet, but that's cheating. and even if sombeody has been to that country in the past, the exchange rate will have changed by then. (can you see that I am gearing up to win the next one?)

  2. Totally understandable. We do expect people to use their resources, though, including the Internet. The quiz is our way of involving our friends and family back home in our adventure - so we want it to be kind of like a treasure hunt.
